St Mary’s Church Heacham needs your urgent help

What does Heacham Parish Church mean to you?

  • Were you or your children baptised or married here? Are your family or friends buried in the churchyard?

  • Do you attend regularly, or the annual services at Christmas, Easter or Remembrance Day, or when you are on holiday?

  • Do you value and appreciate its historical significance and presence in village life through the ages?

Historical buildings like our parish church need a huge amount of work and resources to maintain them in good repair, to update them and keep them fit for purpose in these increasingly bureaucratic and technological times.

St Mary’s is now at the age and stage where urgent building repairs are required. Improvements will also need to be planned over the next year or so to ensure the building conforms to current requirements in a more economical and eco-friendly way so we can reduce our carbon footprint. We want to make it more adaptable for use by both the church fellowship and the village community as we continue to support each other in the years ahead. These future plans will be discussed and prepared and shared in due course, but the urgent priority concerns repairs to the church tower.

Rapid deterioration in the stonework, exacerbated by guttering and roof damage leading to rain penetration mean that the north side has become weakened to an alarming extent. The cupola, the framework holding our church bell, is in serious danger of collapse. Dating from 1150, this bell is the oldest in Norfolk and we want it to be able to ring again to announce services and celebrations

£25000. Every donation will support our vital repairs, for example:

  • £20 for lime mortar to hold the stonework together

  • £40 for galvanised guttering to drain away rainwater

  • £80 towards the lead roofing to protect our tower from the elements

  • £100 towards rebuilding the weakened stone walls

  • £1000 will contribute towards the cost of scaffolding providing access and safety

It costs more than £5000 per month to keep St Mary’s open and functioning. Thanks to our loyal fellowship much of this is being met, and we are truly grateful.

However, due to the pandemic we have not been able to hold fundraising activities and income has also been reduced as service type and capacity have been limited. So, we really need your support to help us reach this target.

The name of the Lord is a strong tower: the people run into it and are safe. (Proverbs 18:10)

Please help us to rebuild our church tower so that it can be a safe refuge for all in the years to come.
